Quarries of England and Wales,by Peter Stanier
This title has been out of print for some years and sought after but a very small supply has been located in the publisher's store.
Taken from the British Geological Survey collection, the photographs, all from glass negatives taken between 1904 and 1935, have been chosen to describe the traditional quarrying techniques, and show cranes, tramways, mineral railways, processing works and other machinery. Many have not appeared in print before and all are accompanied by full well-informed commentary. They record many quarrying and stone-working methods that are no longer practised. For example, more than half include a railway or tramway in some form, a feature that has long been superseded by rubber-tyred trucks and dumpers. Often the photographs are the only record of a vanished industry that once had a major impact on a local community and environment.

The Kalmeter Journal
The Journal of a visit to Cornwall, Devon and Somerset in 1724-25
translated from the Swedish by Justin Brooke
Out of print for some years but a very small supply has been located.
Of all the Swedes who visited the United Kingdom to study our industry and economy in the early eighteenth century, none could measure up to Henric Kalmeter (1693-1750). His journal is an unrivalled record of industrial practices and customs, in particular his notes on the mining and production of copper, tin, lead and calamine. He also covers the wool trade of the south west, imports of iron and timber, and slate quarrying, all in acutely observed detail. The work pushes back the boundaries of our knowledge of the industries of the south west to the eve of the industrial revolution.
